Tips for reading faster and better

Reading is a skill and just like any other skill, there are ways to master it.

Looking for helpful insights to get through your reading list faster and more efficiently? If yes, then see below for helpful insights and tips on how to maximize reading productivity.

Tip 1 – BUILD A HABIT

Read often, read widely and read material that challenges you. It may not be fun, but building a habit that challenges you and helps you learn will make it easier over time.

Tip 2 – FOCUS ON WHAT INTERESTS YOU

Read articles or write-ups on subject areas in which you already have an interest; this helps to reduce instances of boredom and daydreaming. This helps to build a positive association with reading in general.

Tip 3 – FIND A ‘READING SPOT’

Find optimal spots for reading where you enjoy being. It can be anywhere from a cozy chair in your living room, a balcony or porch or anywhere that doesn’t have distractions (like a TV).

Tip 4 - GET THE SKINNY

That’s right….get a pre-read. This applies mainly to textbook readings or readings where you might already know what type of information you are searching for. For example, go through the chapter headings, table of contents etc. This will essentially prime your brain to notice the most important information and help you retain it when you read the text.

Tip 5 – SKIM

Skimming takes tip 4 to the next level. Even though you may retain less, skimming is a great way to get through copious amounts of reading, in order to get jey ideas out of a passage. The process of skimming helps you identify essential paragraphs of interests, then slow down and read specific sections in order to fully understand the text that you’ve been reading. One way to do this quickly is to read the first and last sentences of a paragraph.

Tip 6 – GET ELOCANCE

Using a text-to-speech tool like elocance will allow you to listen to content while achieving better comprehension. Not only will you be able to “read” more but you can multitask while doing other activities like driving, exercising, cooking.

Tip 7 - PRACTICE

After reading, take a moment to apply what you’ve learned. This can be as easy as writing it down for later or telling a friend about it. The process of revising it helps your brain remember this information for far longer than just reading it and moving on to something else.
